To help streamline the electronic prior authorization process for medication, both Cerner and Allscripts announced they will integrate CoverMyMeds’ ePA solution into their EHR platforms.

Allscripts announced the partnership Wednesday afternoon and Cerner’s announcement came Thursday morning.

The agreements allow physicians to automate and expedite the process which determines patients’ benefit coverage for prescriptions, a process historically done on paper and through phone calls.

“Integrating CoverMyMeds within Cerner’s EHR provides physicians access to a modern and efficient authorization process with fewer phone calls between doctors and pharmacies,” said Kashif Rathore, senior director of interoperability at Cerner. “We believe increasing interoperability among pharmacies, prescribers and facility systems will help improve the delivery of healthcare.”

CoverMyMeds’ ePA solution handles nearly three-fourths of the prescriptions nationwide.

“The more payers, pharmacy benefit managers and health plans we can connect our provider clients to, the ore we can help them reduce the cost associated with prior authorizations — improving patient satisfaction and outcomes,” said Faisal Mushtaq, president of Allscripts’ payer and life sciences business.
