The security breach was discovered Oct. 8 following an upgrade in the hospital’s security software. An investigation revealed that the intruder obtained emails from a provider’s account between March 11 and Oct. 8 without the provider’s or the hospital’s knowledge.
According to the release, most of the emails did not contain patient information; however, five emails contained Social Security numbers and a few others contained medical and other patient information.
Carolinas HealthCare has no evidence that the information has been misused at this time, but the health system is taking several measures to ensure the intrusion is contained and prevented in the future, according to the release.
