The research company Gartner hypothesizes that companies may begin using genetic information for hiring decisions in the next few years, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. In recent years, scientists have worked to link genetic traits with personal characteristics, like risk-taking and leadership abilities; at the same time, the cost of genetic profile tests have decreased.

2. At present, it is illegal for companies to base employment decisions on genetic information, due to the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008. However, “a number of companies are brushing up to the edge of this law,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

3. Gartner expects companies to begin using genetic information more frequently in employment decisions within the next five years.
