BCBS Offers $1.3M in Grants to Telemedicine Projects

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has announced $1.3 million in grant funding to support four initiatives that will use telemedicine to expand access to behavioral health services in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

The following four organizations were selected to receive the grant funding:

  • Catholic Charities of Baltimore will receive $53,479 to provide behavioral health services to about 120 underserved patients using video-conferencing technology.
  • Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md., and the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore will receive $189,656 to provide consultations and follow-up visits for young people with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders.
  • La Clinica del Pueblo in Washington, D.C., will receive $424,635 to use teleconferencing technology to expand access to bilingual counselors and healthcare providers.
  • Sheppard Pratt Health System in Baltimore will receive $647,200 to increase access to psychiatrists via teleconferencing and video-conferencing.

"These organizations are at the forefront of a growing movement to use the power of the technology at our hands to treat children and adults who suffer from a variety of behavioral health disorders," said Maria Harris Tildon, CareFirst's senior vice president of public policy and community affairs, in a news release. "We look forward to tracking their progress and seeing how they improve the level of care provided to thousands of patients who may not otherwise receive the treatment they need."
