Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health built its own AI tool to save fourfold over what was available on the commercial market.
The AI summarizes patients’ charts for clinicians, giving them more time to focus on care.
“There are many AI tools in the market that assist clinicians in generating clinical notes. This capability assists clinicians in consuming or reading the vast sea of information that exists in a patient chart,” Sameer Sethi, senior vice president and chief AI and insights officer of Hackensack Meridian Health, told Becker’s at the HIMSS conference in Las Vegas.
Hackensack created the EHR-integrated platform using a large language model that scans clinical notes and lab data, with versions for nine different specialties. Providers can generate a chart summary with the push of a button.
“This tool has evolved over time using feedback from clinicians,” Mr. Sethi said. “The first version of this tool was a general summary, which was helpful, but we felt we could improve it. We now have real-time summarization tailored by specialties, and we are starting to see a significant uptick in adoption and usage.”
In deciding whether to build or buy, Hackensack first concentrates on what it’s trying to fix then does a market scan for what’s available.
“We focus on the voice of the clinician, and do what it takes to get them what they need,” Mr. Sethi said. “We also don’t focus on bringing in AI; instead, we focus on solving a problem. Sometimes the solution is AI, and sometimes it is not.”
