Five Pennsylvania state representatives plan to introduce legislation to regulate artificial intelligence in healthcare.
The bill — backed by Reps. Arvind Venkat, MD, Tarik Khan, RN, Greg Scott, Bridget Kosierowski, RN, and Joe Hogan — would require insurers, hospitals and clinicians to disclose how AI is used in their operations, according to a July 28 news release from Mr. Venkat’s office. It would also require that these entities attest to the Pennsylvania Department of Health or Department of Insurance that bias and discrimination have been minimized and provide evidence to support that claim.
Under the proposal, a “human decision-maker” would be required to make the final determination on patient care based on an individualized assessment when AI is used. Lawmakers said the measure aims to prevent overreliance on the technology and ensure patient safety.
The bill follows similar efforts in other states, including Illinois and Utah, which have enacted rules governing AI use in certain healthcare decisions.
