Healthcare leaders are confident in the potential of AI to transform the industry but are adopting the technology slowly, management consulting firm Bain & Co. found.
Here are seven things to know from an April 22 Bain & Co. article based on survey results from over 400 healthcare executives from provider, payer and pharmaceutical organizations:
1. Ninety-five percent of executives say generative AI will transform healthcare.
2. Thirty-five percent of providers have moved beyond the ideation or proof-of-concept stages of AI, a higher percentage than payers and pharmaceutical companies.
3. Thirty percent of providers are deploying ambient AI scribes systemwide, while another 60% are piloting or implementing them.
4. Sixty-five percent of healthcare AI projects are centrally funded, with most respondents saying they have sufficient budgets to scale the technology.
5. More than half of respondents say security is the top concern when it comes to AI.
6. Forty-seven percent of respondents cited data readiness as a top roadblock for AI.
7. More than half of AI development is internal, with only 15% of solutions being built by startups.
