Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has become the first organization to pilot Epic’s new phenotyping AI tool, according to a LinkedIn post from Stephon Proctor, PhD, MBI, associate chief health informatics officer for platform innovation at the health system.

The tool automatically scans years of patient notes to identify discrete phenotypes — or observable traits — that can help clinicians reach diagnoses more quickly and recommend more targeted treatments. It converts free-text clinical notes into structured, standardized Human Phenotype Ontology terms, which can improve data quality for both clinical care and research.

“This is a big step forward for our genetics program and a glimpse into how AI can make precision medicine more accessible and efficient for patients and providers alike,” Dr. Proctor said in the post.
