Ambient AI shows promising results in reducing clinical documentation and boosting clinician satisfaction, a study by Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health researchers found.
Here are six things to know, according to the May 2 study in JAMA Network Open:
1. The research involved 100 Sutter Health clinicians, 57 of whom completed surveys before and after ambient AI implementation.
2. Clinicians who used ambient AI had a drop of mean time spent in notes during appointments from 6.2 to 5.3 minutes.
3. The providers also experienced a reduction in mental demand, including feeling rushed and the perception of difficulty in documentation tasks.
4. The providers also had decreased burnout, from 42.1% to 35.1%.
5. Sutter Health inked a deal in 2024 with ambient AI company Abridge to offer the technology to thousands of providers.
6. Future research should analyze outcomes after widespread adoption of the tool, the researchers wrote.
