Adventist HealthCare taps AI for patient safety in the ED

Gaithersburg, Md.-based Adventist HealthCare has embedded AI-driven software to support emergency department clinicians in identifying high-risk conditions such as sepsis and heart attack.

The tool, called KATE AI, analyzes a patient’s symptoms against identified medical records and offers recommendations on the appropriate level of care. Emergency care teams are using the tool to help verify care plans for patients who are at a higher risk of serious conditions.

While some nurses were initially concerned that adding a new tool would slow them down, emergency teams have found the opposite to be true, Seleem Choudhury, DNP, COO of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, Md., said in an April 22 news release.

“Time matters in the emergency department,” Dr. Choudhury said. “Our team appreciates how this technology is supporting their clinical skills, advancing our patient safety efforts, and creating a smoother experience for our emergency patients.”

The tool is trained to support teams in improving the recognition of 100 high-risk presentations, the release said.
