6 Statistics on Physician Use of Telemedicine, Secure Messaging, Remote Monitoring

While still relatively rare, physicians are starting to increase their use of technologies that allow them to provide care remotely, according to a new survey from Manhattan Research.

The survey of 3,066 physicians found:

    • About 25 percent of physicians or someone on their team have used a patient portal to communicate with a patient
    • More than 20 percent of physicians that have communicated through a patient portal used secure messaging to do so
    • About 20 percent of physicians have engaged in remote patient monitoring
    • Among physicians that used remote patient monitoring, the average number of patients monitored was reported as 22 per month
    • Video-based telemedicine consults remain rare
    • About 40 percent of physicians believe using technology to communicate with patients will improve patient outcomes

"As we move to an outcomes-based model of healthcare provision in the U.S., remote monitoring and telehealth are going to drive an extension of the point of care," said Manhattan Research Director of Physician Research James Avallone in a news release. "We're seeing physician attitudes really align with policy."
