4 Most-Reported Clinical Benefits of EHRs

A recent study in Health Services Research uses 3,180 responses to the 2011 Physician Workflow Study to identify the top clinical benefits of electronic health record systems.

The following are the EHR benefits most commonly reported by physicians:

  • Overall enhanced patient care (78 percent)
  • Ability to access patient’s chart remotely (81 percent)
  • Alerts about potential medication errors (65 percent)
  • Alerts about critical lab values (62 percent)

Additionally, between 30 and 50 percent of physicians reported that EHR use was associated with clinical benefits related to providing recommended care, ordering appropriate tests and improving patient communication.
