2 Google and Twitter executives create genetic cancer testing startup

One year ago, Color Genomics — a genetic testing startup created by former Google and Twitter leaders Othman Laraki and Elad Gil, PhD — began sending risk tests for breast and ovarian cancer. Now it’s expanded its offerings to test for eight more cancer types, according to Re/code.

Mr. Laraki worked at Google from 2004 to 2008, where he helped develop the Chrome browser. After leaving the company, he and a fellow Google employee, Dr. Gil, created Mixer Labs, a startup that was eventually bought by Twitter. Following the acquisition, Mr. Laraki and Dr. Gil served as product vice presidents at Twitter.

The duo later left Twitter to co-found Color Genomics, which allows male and female customers to utilize hereditary cancer risk tests. The test kit costs $249 and is only available for purchase under a physician’s order.
