11 Ways IT Departments Utilize Clinicians

Just 4 percent of healthcare organizations do not involve clinicians in IT projects, according to the 25th Annual HIMSS Leadership Survey.

Clinicians are generally seen as an important asset in IT projects, both for their medical knowledge and in-depth familiarity with the organization’s current processes and workflows. According to survey responses, clinicians most often have the following roles:

  • Project champions: 74 percent
  • Involvement in IT evaluation and selection: 73 percent
  • Development of policies: 56 percent
  • Clinician trainers: 53 percent
  • Finding innovative ways to use IT in clinical areas: 45 percent
  • IT department employee: 44 percent
  • Business project leader: 43 percent
  • CMIO: 40 percent
  • CNIO: 15 percent
  • Clinical department managers select IT systems: 13 percent
  • No role: 4 percent

Survey results are based on responses from 298 senior-level IT executives from hospitals and health systems.
