AHIP, the lobbying arm of the health insurance industry, conducts an annual census of U.S. health insurers. HSA/HDHPs have grown considerably over the past seven years. In March 2005, roughly 1 million people were enrolled in HSA/HDHPs.

Other findings from AHIP’s census include the following:

•    States with the highest levels of HSA/HDHP enrollment were California, Texas, Illinois, Ohio and Florida.

•    Vermont had the highest percentage of HSA/HDHP enrollees among its under-65 population with private health insurers at 19.9 percent. Minnesota had the second-highest at 14.3 percent.

•    PPOs were the most popular HSA/HDHP product types.
