UPMC provided $892M in community benefits last year

Pittsburgh-based UPMC contributed $892 million in IRS-defined community benefits last year, topping any other healthcare institution in the region.

Of the total community benefits, $313 million were provided to charity care and unreimbursed amounts for programs for the poor. The total also includes $217 million provided in community health programs and donations and $362 million in medical research and education.

“It is extraordinary to note that UPMC touches seven out of 10 people who live in western Pennsylvania, from Pittsburgh to Erie, to Altoona, and many places in between,” G. Nicholas Beckwith III, chairman of UPMC board of directors, said. “UPMC’s mission for more than 30 years has been to serve the region’s diverse neighborhoods and communities large and small with the highest quality care to the sickest and most vulnerable members of our communities.”
