UNM Health System has eliminated 53 leadership roles, including the CFO, chief human resources officer and president of Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho, a spokesperson for the system confirmed to Becker’s.
The move comes as New Mexico’s only academic medical center faces ongoing financial challenges and braces for potential changes to federal funding. In a statement shared with Becker’s, the Albuquerque-based system said the cuts are part of a push to operate “as efficiently as possible” and ensure long-term financial stability.
To support its fiscal goals, the system has launched several cost-saving initiatives, including:
- Reviewing contract expenses, particularly contract labor;
- Reassessing labor expenses and organizational structure, which led to the leadership cuts;
- Streamlining workflows to improve operational efficiency and reduce expenses.
“By taking these steps now, UNM Hospital is positioning itself to balance its current and future budgets,” the health system said in a statement. “UNM Hospital remains committed to what is most important — providing healthcare for New Mexicans, in New Mexico.”
