UNC Health has launched UNC Health Ventures, a corporate venture capital and strategic investment platform created through the rebranding of Rex Health Ventures.
The platform will identify, invest in and collaborate with emerging healthcare companies whose work aligns with the Chapel Hill, N.C.-based system’s mission, according to an Aug. 18 news release. The system said the platform is designed to generate financial returns and strategic value while strengthening care delivery and operations.
Rex Health Ventures was established in 2012 by UNC Health Rex in Raleigh, N.C., and has supported nearly 30 early-stage companies, according to the release. Its work expanded across UNC Health over the past decade, connecting entrepreneurs, co-investors, clinicians and operational leaders to evaluate and adopt new technologies.
“UNC Health Ventures gives us the opportunity to engage with promising healthcare advancements earlier, helping our clinicians evaluate new approaches to care while shaping solutions that address real-world challenges across our health system,” Cristy Page, MD, CEO of UNC Health and dean of UNC School of Medicine, said in the release.
Anita Watkins is managing director of UNC Health Ventures. Portfolio companies include Reprieve Cardiovascular, which is developing fluid management technology for patients with acute decompensated heart failure.
UNC Health operates 20 hospitals and hundreds of clinics statewide.
