San Francisco-based UCSF Health is cutting approximately 200 positions as it faces “serious financial challenges,” SFGate reported June 25.
The layoffs are spread across the health system and affect positions with the “least impact on patients and daily operations,” a spokesperson told the news outlet. About one-fourth of the employees work part time and about half of the full-time employees hold management positions. The spokesperson said the workers’ last day will be 60 days from June 25.
The system attributed the layoffs to rising operations costs and low reimbursement for services, according to the report.
“While this is a difficult decision, it was necessary to maintain financial stability and continue to deliver the many vital healthcare services we provide in San Francisco and across the Bay Area,” the health system said in a statement, according to the report.
The cuts affect about 1% of the system’s workforce and employees will receive benefits including severance and support with career transition, the report said.
