Tucson Medical Center Sells Psychiatric Facility to UHS

King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services has expanded its Arizona footprint by acquiring Palo Verde Behavioral Health from Tucson (Ariz.) Medical Center.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and TMC officials did not say why they decided to sell the hospital. Palo Verde, a 48-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital, is UHS' first behavioral health facility in Tucson. Debra Osteen, president of the UHS Behavioral Health Division, said the for-profit hospital chain plans to expand Palo Verde's capacity to 84 inpatient beds by the end of this year and develop new programs for children and adolescents.

UHS owns two other behavioral health facilities in Phoenix. The company also announced it plans to build up its Phoenix market share with a new psychiatric hospital, Quail Run Behavioral Health, which will operate 100 inpatient beds and open this fall.
