CMS sent a termination notice to Brookwood Baptist Medical Center last month, stating the hospital was at risk of losing its Medicare billing privileges May 31 because it was not in compliance with some Medicare requirements.
CMS sent the letter after a site survey revealed Brookwood Baptist’s psychiatric unit used inappropriate restraint methods on several occasions. In one case, a patient suffered cardiac arrest after being restrained face down. Hospital workers were unable to resuscitate the patient.
Brookwood Baptist submitted a plan of correction to CMS, and the agency rescinded the notice of termination after a follow-up survey revealed the hospital had taken steps to address the issues identified in the original survey, according to the report.
