TeamHealth to waive medical bills for Las Vegas shooting victims treated by affiliated clinicians

Knoxville, Tenn.-based TeamHealth said it will waive all medical bills for patients seen by one of the organization's 195 emergency or hospital medicine affiliated clinicians in the Las Vegas area following the Oct. 1 mass shooting.

In a statement to Becker's Hospital Review, a spokesperson for TeamHealth said, "Victims and families of the Oct. 1 mass shooting will not receive a personal bill from TeamHealth for treatment related to the tragic incident. The company will file insurance claims, if appropriate, but patient responsible amounts will not be pursued. Hundreds of people suffered physical and emotional trauma, and we believe survivors and families should spend the coming weeks and months focused on physical and emotional healing, not the financial impact of medical bills."

TeamHealth CEO Leif Murphy told Becker's the decision to waive patients' medical bills stemmed from numerous conversations with affiliated clinicians who treated patients injured during the shooting.

TeamHealth provides emergency and hospital medicine services for seven hospital in the Las Vegas area, including Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center — the facility closest to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino — Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center and Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican's three campuses.

A spokesperson for Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican similarly said Oct. 12 the hospital will not require any payment from any of the victims.
