The system’s operating revenue increased by 5 percent in the first half of 2015 as compared to the same period of last year. Sentara reported operating revenue of $2.4 billion for the first half of this year. The increase was partially due to Sentara’s acquisition of Elizabeth City, N.C.-based Sentara Albemarle Regional Medical Center in the first quarter of 2014, which accounted for an increase in operating revenues of $19.6 million for the six-month period that ended June 30.
Sentara’s health plan business, which operates as Optima Health, experienced a decrease in premium and capitation revenue of $20.9 million in the first half of 2015 as compared to the same period of 2014. This decrease was primarily driven by Optima’s exit from the federal government’s insurance coverage network, according to Sentara.
The system reported its total operating expenses increased by 3.9 percent in the six-month period that ended June 30, compared to the same period of last year.
Sentara ended the first half of 2015 with an operating surplus of $171 million, up from an operating surplus of $141.6 million for the comparable period of last year.
