Retiring couples now need up to $275k for healthcare costs, study finds

Couples retiring in 2017 will need $275,000 to cover healthcare costs in retirement, according to a new study from Fidelity Benefits Consulting reported by CNN Money.

The estimate considers those with traditional Medicare coverage and includes copayments, premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket drug costs, though it does not include potential nursing home costs. This figure is a 6 percent increase from last year's estimated healthcare costs, and assumes couples will retire at 65 and live to be between 86 and 88.

"No matter how you slice it, the number is brutal," said Adam Stavisky, senior vice president at Fidelity Benefits Consulting.
