Lawmakers in the Republican-led chamber included the ACA’s Medicaid expansion in their state budget proposal, with the caveat that work requirements be part of the deal, the report states.
According to The Hill, inclusion of work requirements represents a compromise between the GOP and new Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, who has long supported Medicaid expansion.
Efforts to expand Medicaid under former Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe were unsuccessful due to opposition from Republicans. And, it is unclear whether the latest efforts will be successful, as the Virginia Senate did not include Medicaid expansion in its recent state budget proposal, according to the report.
If Virginia expands Medicaid, it will join the more than 30 states, plus Washington, D.C., that have already done so. About 300,000 Virginians would reportedly gain access to coverage.
