That finding comes from a recent survey by Medscape Medical News, which polled physician readers on questions related to the financial affects of MACRA following implementation. The poll targeted physicians who work in practices with 25 clinicians or fewer.
Nearly 59 percent of respondents said they expect to receive a financial penalty of as much as four percent under the new rules, while only 9 percent in the same group expect a bonus and 12 expect no change in their Medicare fee reimbursements.
Nearly 33 percent of said the financial effects of MACRA would cause their smaller practices to merge with larger medical groups.
CMS expects to release the final rules on MACRA in November.
