New York critical access hospital to close ICU

Medina (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital has notified the New York State Department of Health that it plans to close its intensive care unit, according to The Daily News.

The critical access hospital, part of Medina-based Orleans Health, is closing its four-bed ICU due to consistently low patient volume. Medina Memorial suffered financial losses on its ICU in 2015 and this year, according to the report.

The hospital will also relocate its outpatient rehabilitation services to Orleans Health's urgent care center in Albion, N.Y.

About 10 employees will be affected by changes, including some nursing and rehabilitation staff. The layoffs will take effect Jan. 31.
