Michigan will erase more than $74 million in medical debt for 71,871 residents through its partnership with nonprofit Undue Medical Debt.

Five things to know:

1. The latest round of debt forgiveness brings the state’s total relief efforts to more than $200 million, according to a June 22 news release from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office. Michigan previously announced more than $144 million in medical debt forgiveness in July 2025.

2. Recipients will begin receiving notification letters this week. Residents qualify for relief if they are at or below 400% of the federal poverty level or have medical debt equal to 5% or more of their annual income.

3. The debt was sourced from Michigan hospitals participating in the program, which requested to be anonymous, the release said.

4. The initiative is supported by a $4.5 million state appropriation and partnerships with Wayne, Oakland and Kalamazoo counties.

5. Michigan said additional rounds of medical debt forgiveness are planned through its ongoing partnership with Undue Medical Debt.
