Massachusetts long-term acute care center reportedly set to close

Vibra Hospital of Western Massachusetts in Springfield is slated to close in March, according to a report on Masslive.com.

The 220-bed long-term acute care center revealed the planned closure in a Nov. 15 letter to the Massachusetts Nurses Association, which represents Vibra Hospital nurses.

"We have made the decision to close the hospital's Springfield Campus and discontinue providing chronic care services and psychiatric services at this location due to current market conditions," the letter states.

The letter goes on to say the hospital plans to submit a formal 90-day notice of its intent to close to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in December, per the department's regulatory process. After receiving the notice, officials said the department will schedule a public hearing.

The hospital said it has no plans to end chronic care services at its satellite campus in Rochdale, Mass., and will make efforts "to assure the orderly transition of care for the Springfield Campus patients." The letter did not indicated how many jobs could be affected by the planned closure.

The MNA said in a news release union-represented nurses plan to advocate for their patients following the closure announcement.
