Maine to vote on Medicaid expansion Nov. 7

Maine voters will determine whether to expand Medicaid to uninsured residents earning no higher than 138 percent of the federal poverty level next month, Portland Press Herald reports.

Medicaid expansion was put on this fall’s ballot by Maine Equal Justice Partners, a liberal advocacy group, after it gathered enough signatures to bring the proposal to a vote. The Nov. 7 vote follows five attempts to pass Medicaid expansion legislation under Maine’s Republican Gov. Paul LePage. While the state legislature passed the legislation five times, Mr. LePage vetoed each effort.

Mr. LePage is against the expansion, while groups representing hospitals, physicians and nurses are in support of expanding Medicaid eligibility, according to the report.
