The federal government distributes disproportionate share hospital payments to hospitals that receive a significant portion of their revenue from Medicare or serve a large population of low-income senior citizens. Under the healthcare reform law, those payments will be reduced beginning in fiscal year 2014.
The Help Our Hospitals Act of 2011 seeks to repeal the provision, which translates to $22 billion in reduced disproportionate share payments to hospitals by 2019.
