Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear announced his state will expand its Medicaid program to 300,000 more low-income individuals, pending the legislature's approval, according to a report by the Lexington Herald Leader.
The Democratic governor cited projections by the University of Louisville and Price Waterhouse Coopers that predicted the program would add 17,000 jobs and $15.6 billion to the state's economy by 2021, and improve the state budget by $800 million in the same time.
U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) criticized the move, claiming Kentucky's Medicaid program has already been struggling to maintain solvency without the additional 300,000 people on the rolls.
