The Illinois Department of Revenue denied the property tax-exempt status of three hospitals last year, Prentice Women’s Hospital among them, after ruling they did not provide enough charity care in proportion to their net patient revenues.
If the county assessor requires Prentice Women’s Hospital to pay property taxes retroactively from 2008 through 2011, the hospital would owe roughly $66 million. A Northwestern Memorial spokesperson said in the report that the health system would “continue to vigorously contest the assessment.”
