The audit found 561 people were enrolled in Illinois Medicaid managed care after their deaths, with an average of two years passing after their deaths before they were signed up. Managed care organizations received $11.4 million of the total overpayments.
The audit also revealed the state paid nearly $30,000 to providers from 2005 to 2013 for one deceased individual who died in 1989.
The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services expects to recover more than $11 million of the overpayments by the end of summer.
