Hospitals’ contributions to the southeastern Pennsylvania economy: $34.4B, 1 in 11 jobs

During 2014, southeastern Pennsylvania hospitals supported 214,173 jobs across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties (about one out of every 11 jobs) and contributed more than $34 billion to local and state economies, almost $4 billion more than during 2013, according to new information released by the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council of The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.

The findings were part of the council’s economic impact analysis, which is derived from the U.S Bureau of Economic Analysis, Medicare Cost Report Data and health system data reported to HAP.

Here are three other findings from the analysis.

1. Southeastern Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems directly employ nearly 99,000 people at an average annual salary of nearly $61,000.

2. The purchasing power of southeastern Pennsylvania hospitals and their employees indirectly generates another 115,330 jobs with an average annual salary of more than $43,500.

3. In Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, hospitals are among the top five largest private sector employers.
