HFMA developed the award program in 2013 to recognize providers with best practices in communication around billing, payment and financial responsibility. To achieve Adopter recognition, healthcare groups must show they have processes in place to help patients understand health insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs. Organizations also must demonstrate values of compassion, advocacy and education in communications with patients.

To date, 85 hospitals and 68 clinics have been recognized by the program. The majority of these organizations belong to nine major healthcare systems:

  • Carolinas HealthCare (Charlotte, N.C.)
  • Duke University Health System (Durham, N.C.)
  • Essentia Health (Duluth, Minn.)
  • Geisinger Health System (Danville, Pa.)
  • Intermountain Healthcare (Salt Lake City)
  • Novant Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.)
  • St. Luke’s Health System (Kansas City, Mo.)
  • The Metro Health System (Cleveland)
  • UAB Medicine (Birmingham, Ala.)
