HCA grows Q2 net income to $1.7B, lifts 2025 revenue outlook to $76B: 7 things to know

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare reported a net income of $1.7 billion (8.9% margin) in the second quarter, up from $1.5 billion (8.4% margin) in the second quarter of 2024, according to financial results released July 25. 

“We are pleased to report strong financial results for the second quarter. They reflected solid revenue growth, improved margins, and better outcomes for our patients,” HCA CEO Sam Hazen said in a news release.

Seven things to know: 

1. Operating income in the second quarter was $2.4 billion (13% margin), compared to $2.2 billion (12.8% margin) in the same period last year. 

2. Second-quarter revenue increased 6.3% year over year to $18.6 billion. Adjusted EBITDA totaled $3.8 billion, up from $3.6 billion.

3. Results for the second quarter include a $3 million loss on facility sales, compared to a $12 gain on facility sales in the same period in 2024.

4. HCA raised its 2025 financial guidance, reflecting stronger performance expectations compared to its initial outlook in January. The health system now projects revenues between $74 billion and $76 billion, up from the prior range of $72.8 billion to $75.8 billion. Net income is expected to be between $6.11 billion and $6.48 billion, compared to the earlier range of $5.85 billion to $6.29 billion.

5. In the second quarter, same facility admissions increased 1.8% year over year, equivalent admissions grew by 1.7% and emergency room visits were up 1.3%. Same facility inpatient surgeries declined 0.3%, outpatient surgeries dropped 0.6% and revenue per equivalent admission increased 4%

6. As of June 30, HCA’s balance sheet reflected cash and cash equivalents of $939 million, total assets of $59.5 billion and long-term debt of $39.4 billion.

7. HCA operates 191 hospitals and about 2,500 ambulatory care sites, including surgery centers, freestanding emergency rooms, urgent care centers and physician clinics, in 20 states and the United Kingdom.
