Grady Memorial $45M Short After Georgia Elects not to Expand Medicaid

Georgia’s decision not to expand Medicaid under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has left Atlanta-based Grady Memorial Hospital with a $45 million annual funding loss, according to a report from local WSB-TV Atlanta 2.

The PPACA cut federal funding for some safety-net hospitals, though the law was designed to offset those losses with state-by-state Medicaid expansions, according to the report.

Because Georgia decided the Medicaid expansion wasn’t affordable for the state, Grady will have to find a way to balance its budget.

The hospital will begin to cut clinical services, though it’s not yet clear which will be first to be downsized, according to the report.
