Gov. Rauner to overhaul Medicaid program in Illinois

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner plans to expand Medicaid managed care programs in Illinois and reduce the number of insurers involved in administering the plans, according to the Chicago Tribune.

About two-thirds of Illinois Medicaid recipients are currently part of managed care plans, which involve private insurers administering Medicaid benefits. Republican Gov. Rauner wants to expand the managed care programs to 80 percent of Medicaid recipients in Illinois and hold insurers more accountable for patient outcomes, according to the report.

Gov. Rauner also plans to cut the number of insurers involved in the state's managed care programs from 12 to no more than seven. This change will get rid of some of the administrative challenges the program has created for Illinois healthcare providers, Felicia Norwood, director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, told the Chicago Tribune.
