The new ED and expanded cancer center are expected to open later next year. Columbus Regional’s current ED is more than 20 years old and operates above capacity: The ED was built to serve 25,000 patients per year, but the hospital’s ED volume has averaged 40,000 the past few years.
Columbus Regional originally planned to build a new ED in 2008, but flooding forced the hospital to postpone its plans.
