Upon leaving Ernst & Young in 1982, Mr. Johnson joined HCA as a tax manager in the research and planning division, bringing his total HCA tenure to 30 years. He eventually became HCA’s vice president of tax in 1995, and three years later, he was named senior vice president and controller.
Mr. Johnson, who also is president of HCA, oversees the company’s treasury, government programs, investor relations, development, managed care, controller, performance improvement and several other areas.
In 2011, Mr. Johnson and HCA recorded $2.47 billion in profit — a sizable increase from the $1.21 billion in fiscal year 2010 thanks to its joint venture with HealthONE. HCA’s net revenue for FY 2011 was $29.7 billion, up roughly 6 percent from 2010, and it also had an adjusted EBITDA of $6.06 billion.
