The donation will establish the Smidt Heart Institute, which will aim to advance vital research and innovative practices in cardiology and cardiology surgery.

“This extraordinary gift is heartfelt in every way and stands as a wonderful testament to the enduring impact of our globally respected heart institute on the lives of so many patients,” said Shlomo Melmed, MD, dean of the Cedars-Sinai medical faculty and executive vice president of academic affairs.

The Smidt Foundation, established by Eric and Susan Smidt, supports organizations making strides in education, medical research, disaster relief, veterans’ affairs and the arts. Eric Smidt owns Harbor Freight Tools, a discount tool and equipment retailer.
