The $156.8 million profit came on $4.25 billion of total revenue, giving Aurora an improved 3.7 percent operating margin. Aurora’s expenses rose only 2.6 percent, while revenue increased 3 percent.

Aurora was able to keep expense growth limited thanks to the 14-hospital system’s move to freeze its defined pension plan in 2012. Aurora employees now have defined contribution plans.

Aurora’s total profit, including investment income and profit from its joint ventures, totaled $195 million, down slightly from $198.3 million in fiscal year 2012.
