The tax increase is expected to generate $1 million per year in additional revenue to fund the construction of a $25 million rural hospital in Sumter County.
To use the tax revenue, the hospital must be designated a critical access care facility, according to the report.
Earlier this year, the state legislature passed a bill, sponsored by Alabama Rep. Artis McCampbell, to allow the sales tax increase to be brought to a public vote.
If the sales tax is voted down, Sumter residents will continue to drive more than 30 miles to receive medical care.
