Over the next three years, roughly 31 million — or one in five — Americans will buy health insurance from a government-run exchange, an online marketplace to shop for plans, which open for enrollment beginning in October this year, according to the report. Private exchanges run by nongovernment entities typically for larger employers will grow even higher, from 1 million next year to an estimated 40 million by 2018.
Accenture projects private exchanges will sell 56 percent of all exchange-based plans in five years, and one in four of today’s employer-sponsored health plan enrollees will switch to a private exchange by 2018.
