For the survey, Flywire polled 2,004 U.S. adults between July 9 and 16.

Here are four more takeaways:

  1. Nearly all respondents (95%) said there needs to be a simpler way to understand and pay for medical bills.
  2. Ninety-three percent of patients said they want easier ways to pay bills over time, with many preferring installment options longer than 12 months. Thirty-eight percent  said they would like payment terms of 12 to 18 months.
  3. Eighty-nine percent of respondents said they are worried about rising medical expenses, and 60% said they could not cover unexpected costs in a single payment.
  4. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said they worried about healthcare data breaches, and 31% said they have received breach notifications regarding their medical data.
