5 things to know about the working uninsured

Healthcare providers may be treating an influx of previously uninsured patients, but there remains a significant group of people who do not have healthcare coverage, despite being employed.

Here are five insights into the working uninsured, according to an infographic from software solutions company Wellthie.

1. The majority of uninsured individuals (85 percent) have at least one person working a full- or part-time job in their household.

2. The working uninsured vary in employment status.

•    Employed full-time all year: 11 percent
•    Employed full-time for part of the year: 19 percent
•    Employed part-time all year: 18 percent
•    Employed part-time for part of the year: 17 percent

3. More than half of the working uninsured (55 percent) work for businesses with less than 50 employees. Company size for the rest of the working uninsured includes:

•    50 to 999 employees: 19 percent
•    More than 1,000 employees: 21 percent
•    Public sector: 5 percent

4. The majority of the working uninsured are millennials; 45 percent are between ages 19 and 34. Forty-three percent of the working uninsured are 35 to 54 years old, and 12 percent are 55 to 64 years old.

5. Most of the working uninsured are eligible for help in getting coverage; 79 percent are eligible for Medicaid or individuals health plan subsidies.
