27% of Connecticut Hospitals Lost Money Last Year

Out of Connecticut’s 30 acute-care hospitals, eight recorded operating deficits last year — twice as many as 2010, according to a report from the Connecticut Office of Health Care Access cited in The Hartford Courant.

The University of Connecticut’s John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington recorded the largest operating loss of the eight hospitals at $16.6 million, according to the report. The other hospitals that recorded losses include St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Johnson Memorial Medical Center in Stafford Springs, Milford (Conn.) Hospital, New Milford (Conn.) Hospital and Windham Hospital in Willimantic.

Overall, the average operating margin among all acute-care hospitals in Connecticut was 3.62 percent in 2011, a decrease from 4.27 percent in 2010.
