2 Ohio hospitals abruptly halt operations

Insight Hospital and Medical Center Trumbull and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, both in Warren, Ohio, paused all inpatient, outpatient and emergency room services March 27 due to ongoing bankruptcy and financial disruptions from former owner Dallas-based Steward Health Care.

Tom Connelly, local president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, told NBC affiliate WFMJ March 28 that the hospitals also laid off the director of nursing, the assistant director of nursing, the administrative secretary and the human resources coordinator.

A spokesperson for Insight Health refuted the claims to Becker’s and denied upper management layoffs.

Existing patients at both Insight hospitals are being transferred, with appointments being canceled to protect patient safety, an Insight Health spokesperson said in a March 27 statement shared with Becker’s.

The news comes after Insight Hospital and Medical Center Trumbull and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital paused their inpatient and outpatient services and furloughed an unspecified number of employees on March 24. In early March, Insight Hospital stopped admitting nonemergent patients.

Both Insight Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation were purchased by Flint, Mich.-based Insight Health System in early November from Steward, which sought Chapter 11 protection May 6, 2024. On March 11, 2025, the for-profit health system received bankruptcy court approval to sell certain management functions and assets to Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health affiliate Golden Sun TSA Services, which affected 25 former Steward hospitals, including Insight Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation.

“While the plan remains in place to redesign the hospitals’ operations fully independent of Steward, we apologize for the confusion this transition has caused the community and for the undue burden it has placed on patients and employees,” the Insight statement said.

Members of the Ohio Nurses Association at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital have not received formal layoff notices, employment status direction or communication from Insight, according to a March 28 ONA news release shared with Becker’s

“The Ohio Nurses Association is demanding that Insight Health follow our collective bargaining agreement, provide healthcare coverage, severance, and the respect our members have earned,” the release said.

The ONA has demanded that Insight Health provide immediate written layoff notices and confirmation that employees will receive pay during this time; full and timely payroll processing; healthcare coverage during the layoff period; bargaining with the ONA regarding the layoffs’ effects; commitment to reopening both Insight Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation “as soon as possible, with a concrete plan to restore services”; and an explanation of how Insight Health plans to regain workforce, community and patient trust. Becker’s has reached out to Insight Health for comment regarding the number of affected employees and how long it expects the hospital services to remain paused. Becker’s also has reached out to Steward and will update this story should more information become available.
