28 health systems dropping Medicare Advantage plans | 2026

Contract breaks between major health systems and certain Medicare Advantage insurers are continuing in 2026. Providers dropping plans often cite prior authorization denials and slow reimbursement; in other cases, insurers are terminating the contracts themselves.

MA now covers more than half of eligible Medicare beneficiaries, making these terminations increasingly consequential for patient access. Becker’s has tracked these decisions since 2023; our 2025 coverage is here.

28 health systems dropping Medicare Advantage plans:
Editor’s note: This is not an exhaustive list and includes contract breaks effective in or announced in 2026. It will continue to be updated this year.

  1. Naples (Fla.) Comprehensive Health will be out of network with Centene’s Wellcare and HCSC’s HealthSpring at the end of 2026.

  2. Fort Myers, Fla.-based Lee Health will be out of network with UnitedHealthcare MA plans at the end of 2026.

  3. Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Health will go out of network with Anthem MA at the end of 2026 if the parties cannot reach a new deal.

  4. Winchester, Va.-based Valley Health System will go out of network with UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage on Oct. 1.

  5. Columbus-based Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, The James Cancer Center and OSU-affiliated physicians will be out of network with Humana MA on Oct. 1. Humana notified the health system that it was terminating the contract, and OSU said it remains interested in renewing. Humana also said it is open to continued discussions.

  6. Oklahoma-based Norman Regional Health System went out of network with Aetna MA in August, and will go out of network with UnitedHealthcare MA in October.

  7. New Bern, N.C.-based CarolinaEast Medical Center officially exited BCBS North Carolina’s MA network on July 1, while CarolinaEast Physicians remain in-network. The medical center will also go out of network with UnitedHealthcare MA at the end of 2026.

  8. Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services will stop scheduling patients with UnitedHealthcare MA plans, effective Jan. 1, 2027. 

  9. University of Miami Health System is out of network with UnitedHealthcare MA, excluding the Preferred Care Network plan, which will go out of network in 2027 without a new contract in place.

  10. Providence, R.I.-based Brown University Health physicians went out of network with UnitedHealthcare MA on July 1. Brown’s hospitals went out of network with the insurer’s MA plans in July 2025.

  11. Tampa, Fla.-based Moffitt Cancer Center went out of network with Aetna MA in December 2025 and went out of network with Humana MA on July 1.

  12. NewYork-Presbyterian and UnitedHealthcare MA will go out of network on Oct. 1 without a new agreement in place, following several extensions of the original January deadline.

  13. Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional went out of network with Aetna MA in April.

  14. Tacoma, Wash.-based MultiCare no longer contracts with any nongroup MA PPO plans in the Puget Sound region.

  15. Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic went out-of-network with most MA plans from UnitedHealthcare and Humana, per the Star Tribune.

  16. Irvine, Calif.-based Providence Clinical Network went out of network with UnitedHealthcare MA in January.

  17. New York City-based Mount Sinai went out of network with Anthem MA in January.

  18. Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health went out of network with Humana, WellCare (Centene), and Health Care Service Corp. (formerly Cigna) MA plans in January.

  19. Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network went out of network with UnitedHealthcare MA in January.

  20. Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra Health dropped Humana MA in January.

  21. Most primary care providers at Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham are no longer in network with MA plans from UnitedHealthcare or BCBS Massachusetts.

  22. Boise, Idaho-based St. Luke’s Health System no longer accepts Humana MA.

  23. Montrose (Colo.) Regional Health ended its contract with Humana MA in 2026.

  24. Kettering (Ohio) Health no longer contracts with Humana and Devoted Health MA in 2026.

  25. Clarion-based Iowa Specialty Hospitals and Clinics dropped all MA plans in 2026, except for Aetna, Medigold, UnitedHealthcare, and Wellmark BCBS.

  26. Batesville, Ark.-based White River Health went out of network with Aetna MA in February, and with UnitedHealthcare MA in April.

  27. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health is no longer in-network with Aetna MA in 2026.

  28. South Kingstown, R.I.-based South County Hospital is out of network with Aetna MA.
